According to a new study, a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and beans may decrease the risk of dementia. The study findings reveal that people who ate an anti-inflammatory diet were less likely to develop dementia. When a person intakes less inflammatory foods, it helps the brain and lowers dementia risk over time.
The American Academy of Neurology conducted a study among people who follow an anti-inflammatory diet. They consume fruits, vegetables, and beans along with tea or coffee. Researchers found that these people have a lower risk of developing dementia later on. The research report was published in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology named Neurology.
Researchers stated that anti-inflammatory foods are great sources of beneficial vitamins and minerals that can protect our cells from damage. These types of foods also can prevent inflammation in the body.
A registered dietitian nutritionist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Liz Weinandy said, “We know diet plays a major role in our overall health, whether it is heart health or brain health or anything in between. This study adds to the growing body of evidence that what we choose to eat can affect our risk for disease, and, in this case, the risk of dementia.”
