Itchy scalp is a common issue and many of us are having it without any harm. But sometimes the itch can be a cause of irritation. To avoid or reduce the problem we should be aware of the causes of itching. Here are some major causes of itching based on dermatologists’ statements.
When you have dandruff, you may experience flakes and itchiness all over your head. It is very irritating indeed. There are some common causes of having dandruff-like oily scalp and dead skin. A yeast-like fungus called Malassezia can also be responsible for dandruff. You can use shampoo on your scalp to get relief from it. The best way is to have a massage with a good quality shampoo. Try to use a shampoo that contains zinc or salicylic acid.
The itchy problem can occur as an allergic reaction. Your whole scalp may feel itchy due to an allergy. Some hair products or foods may prompt this allergic reaction. The chair of dermatology at the University of Minnesota Maria Hordinsky said, “The allergen is often fragrance, or a moisturizing agent called propylene glycol.”
Sometimes you may have scaly patches. Due to some medications and dry weather psoriasis can occur. Stress or infection also can trigger flares. If you have psoriasis, you should consult with your dermatologist. Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner advised using a shampoo with coal tar.
