The Little Mermaid, a live-action Disney production, has gotten its first, breathtaking look. At Disney’s D23 expo, the first trailer for the eagerly anticipated “Little Mermaid” live-action remake debuted, showcasing the acclaimed R&B performer and actor in the legendary role of mermaid princess Ariel.

Halle Bailey will portray Ariel, and Jonah Hauer-King will portray Prince Eric. The cast also includes Noma Dumezweni in an unspecified role, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

The breathtaking video immerses us in the Little Mermaid’s live-action world. Gorgeous and sparkling with pink, blue, and green tones, Ariel’s mermaid tail is stunning. Naturally, she is wearing a purple bandeau top and her trademark red hair. The moment we’ve all been waiting for, Halle singing the iconic Ariel song “Part of Your World,” appears at the end of the trailer.

It’s a strong performance from Bailey, who was cast in the movie back in 2019. Bailey’s casting in the movie drew criticism from the same trolls who always object when people of color are cast in roles that have historically been played by white people. We’re fairly confident that it will be more difficult for anyone to convincingly argue that Bailey can’t handle her singing duties in the movie.

The movie’s director is Rob Marshall, who also oversaw Mary Poppins Returns. The Little Mermaid will be released in May 2023, according to Disney.
